Presentation of the modules
Antonio Conte does not give up 4-3-3, but launches major changes from basic team to replace the disqualified Bonucci and Vidal and by starting on the bench Alessandro Matri. Chiellini is shown in a position of central defender with De Ceglie to occupy the left back position; the mezzala seat vacated by Vidal is occupied by Giaccherini deployed mezzala left position with Marchisio on half right;in attack the role of striker is taken by Fabio Quagliarella, with Del Piero off to the left and Pepe in the usual position on the right.
Attilio Tesser confirms the 5-3-2 which had well-controlled in the previous game against Napoli. In front of Ujkani the three central defenders are from right to left Dellafiore, Centurions and Ludi, with Morganella right and Gemiti left to guard the bands. Radovanovic plays in midfield in front of the defense with Marianini right mezzala position and Rigoni in that of mezzala left. Rubino and Meggiorini are the strikers.
 Tactical developments of the match
The beginning of the match saw Juventus pressing hard Novara and go ahead early with a goal in the fourth minute of Simone Pepe. The initial choices of Tesser are rather cautious. The next slide shows the initial outputs prepared by the Novara coach. The two full-backs remain low to counteract the offensive wingers of Juventus with three central defenders which can stay tight in the central position; on the Bianconeri fullbacks go out the mezzali with the median who covers the mezzala on the strong side and Meggiorini moving down on Pirlo. On the slide you see the system described in the left wing, with Rigoni coming out of Lichtsteiner, Gemiti taking Pepe and Radovanovic which shortens the right mezzala Marchisio.
Juventus punished surgically the choices of Tesser. One of the first problems of the Tesser project is to cover the entire width of the midfield with only three men, with two mezzali forced out very wide on the Juventus fullbacks. Juventus is good at running the ball quickly from side to side to take advantage of the free spaces that are created on the weak side and that side-slipping of three men promptly fails to cover. By the second minute Juve go close to scoring taking advantage in their favor of Tesser tactics. The ball circulates quickly from left to right of Juventus attack and comes to Lichtsteiner on which Rigoni is late. Lichtsteiner has time to control the ball, lifting his head and serve the cut behind Ludi of Quagliarella serving a beautiful assist, the first in a long series, for insertion into the heart of Marchisio who will kick in back Ujkani from ranged distance.

That the situation is not random and isolated is shown by the next slide, reported about 30 seconds earlier.
The difficulty to cover the breadth of the field also results in potential and often used on the external position of numerical superiority for Juventus. In the following two slides Radovanovic is slipping from side to side to cover Lichtsteiner, but he is late and the inner overlap of the fulback, rewarded by the passage of Pepe, and manifests the two against one of the Juventus players in the right wing against Gemiti.

The problems described above is added a little aggressive interpretation of the role of the central defenders, who, though three in number, shorter on Juventus strikers with excessive shyness, allowing them comfortable reception between the lines. The following example is Del Piero receives from Pirlo and finds himself free to turn with the ball and put on the front goal.

Of these receptions between the lines benefits especially Fabio Quagliarella, who, as we shall see, he will use these receipts to provide assists for the entries of the teammates, especially mezzali. At fifteen minutes of play, after fifteen minutes in apnea and dominated by Juventus, Novara changes its output system, making it more aggressive. On his left wing Rigoni is ser to come out on the right central defender ofJuventus, Barzagli, with Gemiti ready to shorten up on Lichtsteiner and Ludi to slide off Pepe, with Meggiorini always in the area of Pirlo.

Clearly, the center of gravity of Novara moves a little forward and the three defense is expanded with Ludi opened in the left wing when the ball is on the right side of the Juventus attack . The advantages obtained with the progress of the center of gravity, however, are outweighed by the greater space available to the Juventus attacks, more space behind the midfield and defense of Novara: too strong Juventus at this stage of the match and too little aggressively pressure Novara on the Bianconeri ball carriers. Best results on the other hand has the passing, at the half-hour of play, a sort of 4-3-1-2 with Gemiti in elastic position between that of left mezzala and to the fifth man on the left and Rigoni up behind Meggiorini and Rubino. If the defensive phase remains poor because of lack of aggressiveness and the incorrect time of release, the Novara gains something in the process of possession, taking advantage of the reciprocal movements of the two strikers, with Meggiorini freed from the guard to Pirlo and free to do pure striker and, above all, the movements of the attacking midfielder Rigoni, who flips over the entire width of the field and can provide useful solutions for the teammates with passages with the result of slightly increasing the duration and the number of passes in the phases of ball possession of the guests .

Important for Novara also the movement of Rigoni in addition to strikers, as occasion of the last minute of the first half. On cross of Morganella, with Barzagli and Chiellini working on Rubino and Meggiorini, Rigoni is getting in the heart of the area and heads the ball to Buffon.
For all the second half Novara maintains this new module confirming the improvements in the phase of ball possession shown in the final phase of the first half, but keeping intact the problems were highlighted during the non-ball possession and with the chance for Juventus to maneuver in more extensive space. For their part Juventus played a great game, taking advantage of the now familiar weapons : the movement of the ball is fast and full of solutions, thanks to the large amount of movement without the ball synchronous among all players, while the defense transition and rare phases of non-ball possesion are consolidated played with his usual aggressiveness. The few times that the Novara was groped in a position to start the action starting from their defensive line, the pressure of Juventus is brought into position firmly and fairly advanced. An example is provided in the following series of slides in which Ludi serves Radovanovic, at once pressed by Marchisio, which forces the middle of Novara to the back pass back to Ludi, on which continues the pressure of the Juventus mezzala.

To illustrate the fierce defensive transition and highlight the important work done by central defenders in this phase of play (work often little displayed, especially on television, because they are almost always out of shot) I have chosen a situation occurred on the half hour game. The Novara try to get out as soon regained the ball leaning to the center-forward Rubino in their field; on Rubino takes the immediate pressure of two men, Pirlo and Pepe. The striker of Novara is good at circumventing the pressure by filter the ball between the two Juventus players, throwing Meggiorini to a potential break in the open field. Chiellini is initially high and strong on Rigoni, as always in support of the prior marking to pressure the midfielders and strikers. Rubino on the ball, Chiellini comes off Rigoni and attacks the ball forward, managing to intercept it and removing it from the availability of Meggiorini. In Chiellini behavior from this action is illustrated all the work of central defenders in the early stages of defensive transition: aggressive and preventive marking on strikers to remove from the ball carrier the playing solutions while receiving the high pressure of midfielders and attackers and attack the ball going forward.

Within the frames of the offensive plays of Juventus particularly in evidence is successful the work of Quagliarella and Giaccherini performing his role exactly as requested by the coach (at least according to my interpretation). The choice to replace Matri was in a way predicted by Antonio Conte in the pre-match press conference, in which he argued that the game would have required technical players. Quagliarella has played the role of striker in a less “deep”, playing as a sort of offensive regista, meeting to receive balls and then play them with great quality. Giaccherini, in the inside left position has instead played the role of mezzala penetrating into the heart of the Novara defense, both internally and externally, with continuous insertions from behind. Is the axis and combinations between Quagliarella and Giaccherini have been the cause of many scoring chances for Juve. In 13 minutes Quagliarella gets open and came off the mark, he receives the ball and serves Giaccherini that fits centrally and comes from an excellent position to shoot.

Same situation, 30 meters back, in 28 minutes, with Quagliarella sending on target Giaccherini with a great ball.

On the seventh minute of the second half, Quagliarella works the usual reception by meeting the ball and awards, even with the heel, the inclusion of Giaccherini, once again brought only before the goalkeeper.
As already said, the move to 4-3-1-2 improve phases of possession of Novara, with guests in the second half, while continuing to suffer from virtually every offensive action goals of Juventus, they can move closer to Buffon. The header of Rubino is perfectly foiled by a the black and white number one , but the dangers are more potential, and originate only from few balls not well managed in the middle of the field by Giaccherini. We show for example the eleventh minute action took place in the second half: Pirlo passes in the middle Giaccherini who is being pressed by Porcari; former Cesena instead of protecting the ball by placing the body between the opponent and the ball tries to evade the pressure with a feint by sliding the ball. Porcari, however, able to anticipate and creating a situation of 4 Vs 2 in favor of Novara, sore played by the guests.

The goal of the half-hour of Quagliarella puts the result back to the safe and Juventus at the top of Standings.
Many positive findings from the match against Novara. Here are some. The team continues to get it right the approach to the “easy” game against the small. Sandwiched between the match at the Olimpico against Roma and the trip to Udine, Juventus faces the “small” Novara with impeccable concentration and determination. Excellent. In the field went 4 of 10 players of movement that are not part of the “owners”: Quagliarella, De Ceglie, Del Piero and Giaccherini instead of Matri, Bonucci, Vucinic and Vidal. The game of the team remains unchanged and the “new” play with the same strength and determination of the owners. Above all, the choices of Conte always seem prudent and immediately well interpreted by the players on the field. I refer to the interpretation provided by Fabio Quagliarella, chosen instead of Matri just to give a new look at the role of striker and to Giaccherini, full of dynamism to the whole field and deepest entries within the spaces created by the strikers. Interesting is to see a graph of the average positions taken by the players of Juventus during the game.
Note the position of Giaccherini, much more advanced than that of Marchisio (who plays in the presence of ex-Cesena in a more conservative role) and that of Fabio Quagliarella more behind than Pepe and Del Piero a witness to his work as a link between midfield and attack. The third good news is the return to the field as a holder of Fabio Quagliarella, evidently felt by the coach was ready to face 90 minutes. And now against Novara, as fully described, have highlighted the technical-tactics features that can lead the striker to become an important part in the offensive play of Antonio Conte. Continuing to discuss the performance of the 4 “not holders”, good game of Giaccherini that provides excellent performance. Good game of De Ceglie in both phases of the game, while the captain Del Piero was inaccurate in front of goal. In the face of a game dominated and a large number of scoring chances, the defect highlighted by all is the number of goals made in relation to the built occasions.
With the problem of leaving the result in the balance for most of the match. It is not a situation limited to one game against Novara: Juve was the first in the statistics for shots on the mirror and shots on goal , but it is only the seventh highest number of goals compared to shots made (10%, a goal every ten shots, the head of the statistical Milan with 14%) and eleventh for the highest number of goals compared to shooting in the mirror (27% against about 38% of Milan). Probably the numbers indicate a structural deficiency in the process of finalizing some elements of the team. The conclusions of Giaccherini sills and action in the second half in which Pepe and Del Piero coming from just in front Ujkani and Centurioni able to anticipate Del Piero on the service of Pepe are perhaps emblematic. The solution Conte has already found : play well, indeed, very well, and create a lot. You win.
