Antonio Conte’s new-look Juventus side has already began to mirror itself on the manager, displaying the type of drive, determination and character that characterised the midfielder’s career. The 1-0 win over Siena may not have been as spectacular as the 4-1 demolition of Parma, but it was a victory founded upon hard work and desire:

“We played against a well-organised team who looked to break using Gonzalez’s pace and Calaiò’s skill. We’ve done well to handle the game and come away with an important victory. Juve’s recent history shows that the team has dropped many points against smaller clubs and today we didn’t win thanks to luck, we won because we prepared the game well. We knew what was required to cause danger to Siena. Defensively we were very tight because we had to be alert to their counter-attacks. We showed the right levels of aggression and determination. Many teams will struggle on this pitch.”

Juve can also count on quality to add to this character. The players on the bench today show the strength in depth which is beginning to develop, with the likes of Del Piero, Quagliarella and Vidal able to come on and change the course of a game. The Chilean made his second appearance this afternoon, bringing energy and combativeness, and also allowing Conte to readjust the team’s shape.

“The important thing is winning, with or without Vidal. I make certain decisions in order to win. Today we managed it with a superb move. Vidal brought fresh legs to the team when our opponents were tiring. He did well, as did the whole team. Krasic on the bench? We’re working to become a team and therefore it’s right that perhaps Giaccherini or Pepe play and Krasic or Estigarribia are on the bench. Pepe and Giaccherini give us certain guarantees and balance at the current moment. Today Krasic would have come on, had it not been for Matri picking up a light knock.”

Andrea Pirlo put in another solid display this afternoon, impressing both in possession of the ball, and with the cover he offers when the Bianconeri are under pressure:

“With the central midfielders we’re looking to work hard on the defensive side of things. I knew that Pirlo was a champion, but he’s surprised me: he never moans, he sets an example and is fundamental to me. Whoever watches him train can only work hard themselves.”

With the three points won in Siena, the Bianconeri currently find themselves five ahead of Inter, Roma and Lazio, but Conte refuses to get carried away:

“We’re starting behind the teams from Milan in terms of personnel, Napoli and Lazio have important structures in place, but we have the ability to grow.”
